Rick Beck’s large-scale sculptures are simultaneously familiar and perplexing. Many of the objects are derived from or directly related to simple, common tools, instilling an immediate relationship with their viewer. The material—cast glass—and the scale—6 to 8 feet tall—change that recognition into wonder as the subtle tones and details of the casting are revealed through careful inspection. The combination of rough-hewn surfaces and deep, rich colors give a particular sense of mass to the sculptures, seducing one to become involved either through touch or at least close proximity.
